Meet Detroit emcee, med-school student and Pakistani American Lazarus. I am not a fan of Charlie LeDuff, but this is a great look into the world of Lazarus.
“Growing up I always had trouble with that? Where do I fit in? Am I associating myself with black people? Am I associating myself with other Arabic people? Am I associating myself with the white people? And Ultimately, what I’ve gained and what I’ve become now is I want to associate myself with everybody and have a little bit of everything in me.”
The great American poet Walt Whitman once said, “Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.” I will never forget my lit prof in college upholding Whitman’s deceleration as a sort of litmus test for finding the best of the best poets amongst us. Today people read books on computer screens that are almost exclusively prose rather than verse, for purposes of entertainment or self help rather than awakening their heart, mind and soul. It is the music we listen to on those same computers that is our poetry. Listen to good poetry. Listen to poetry that will challenge you. Listen to poetry that will make you uncomfortable, poetry that will make you angry, make you cry or make you laugh. Listen to poetry that will aid you in dreaming bigger more vivid dreams. Right now Listen to Lazarus. And when you are done go to youtube and look for more:
So this is Detroit rapper Magestik Legend. He just released this video earlier in the week. It is really fantastic. It is well shot and the concept is pretty brilliant. It made me appreciate the song even more. The song “All Eye Know” is from his recent mixtape To Be Continued … Chapter 1 … Hosted By T3 of Slum Village. I picked it up a few months back after I had the pleasure of hearing him do a set at Billy’s in Easttown. You can download it here. It’s great stuff. He also has another mixtape/album available Free for download on his site. It is also certainly worth the time it will take you to download it and check it out. You can click play on the player below to listen to my favorite track form that project: “Chosen Ones”
